The Vestaburg Wolverines delivered a thrilling comeback victory Friday night, rallying from a double-digit deficit to defeat the Merrill Vandals, 53-49, in a game that showcased resilience, clutch shooting, and a total team effort. The opening quarter set the tone for a competitive battle, as both teams traded baskets in a fast-paced start. After eight minutes of back-and-forth action, the scoreboard read 11-11. Merrill found its rhythm late in the second quarter, using a strong final two minutes to create separation. The Vandals built momentum on both ends of the floor and carried a 26-17 advantage into halftime. Vestaburg faced even more adversity in the third quarter, falling behind by as many as 11 points. But the Wolverines refused to fold. Sparked by defensive intensity and timely scoring, they mounted a key run late in the period to trim the deficit to six heading into the fourth. The final quarter turned into a heavyweight fight. With 4:40 remaining, senior Callie Bills buried a clutch three-pointer to tie the game and ignite the Wolverines’ bench. The teams continued to trade big plays before senior Jaiden Anderson delivered a momentum-shifting moment at the 3:20 mark, knocking down a corner three to give Vestaburg its first lead since the opening quarter, 46-45. The drama only intensified from there. After two more minutes of back-and-forth action, junior Lily Johnston delivered the defining play of the night. With 38 seconds left, Johnston used a pick-and-roll to create space at the top of the key and drained a go-ahead three-pointer, putting Vestaburg up 52-49. The Wolverines followed with a defensive stop and a crucial free throw to seal the 53-49 victory. Johnston led the charge with 22 points, four rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two blocks in a standout all-around performance. Anderson added 17 points, including the pivotal fourth-quarter triple. Jessica Stouten stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and an eye-popping nine steals. Callie Bills contributed four points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Kaydance Bills chipped in two points, four rebounds, and a steal. The win secures a second-place finish in the league division for Vestaburg and sets up a highly anticipated rematch with Merrill next Thursday in the crossover game between the division’s second-place teams. If this matchup was any indication, fans can expect another intense showdown.
