The Vestaburg softball team opened their matchup against Lakeview in a competitive Game 1 but ultimately fell 16-7 after a late surge by the Wildcats. Vestaburg wasted no time getting on the board. Emma Myers led off the game with a double to right-center field, immediately setting the tone. After aggressively stealing third base, Myers later came around to score on a passed ball, giving the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. Lakeview responded in a big way in the top of the second inning, putting up five runs to take control of the game. Vestaburg answered back in the bottom half of the inning, adding a run to cut the deficit to 5-2. The score held steady through the next couple of innings as both teams battled to gain momentum. The Wolverines found that momentum in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hayden Lott sparked the rally after being hit by a pitch, followed by a walk from Abagail McNamara. Emma Myers continued her standout performance with an RBI single, bringing in a run. Terian DeVerney later reached on an error, allowing two more runs to score. In total, Vestaburg plated four runs in the inning to take a 6-5 lead and shift the energy in their favor. However, Lakeview responded once again, capitalizing on defensive miscues by Vestaburg. A big sixth inning by the Wildcats broke the game open, as errors and timely hitting led to a lopsided final score of 16-7. Emma Myers led the Wolverines offensively with an outstanding performance, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and scoring three runs. In the circle, Jersie Miller pitched a complete game and recorded an impressive 10 strikeouts despite the tough outcome. In Game 2, Vestaburg struggled to find consistent offense and fell 16-2. The Wolverines did manage to strike first again, as Kelsey Cole doubled to start the inning and later scored with the help of a few wild pitches to give Vestaburg an early 1-0 lead. However, the offense was unable to build on that momentum for the remainder of the game. Lakeview took advantage of defensive errors once again, putting together strong second and third innings to pull away. Vestaburg had a few bright spots at the plate, with Kelsey Cole leading the way with a double and a single. Jaiden Anderson and Terian DeVerney also contributed with base hits. Ella Beres took the circle in Game 2 and showed flashes of her potential. While she battled throughout, walks combined with defensive miscues made it difficult to limit Lakeview’s scoring opportunities. Despite the results, the Wolverines remain focused on improvement. Vestaburg will look to clean up defensive mistakes and continue developing at the plate as they move forward in the season, with the team committed to putting in the work and bouncing back stronger in their next opportunity.
