COLEMAN, MI – The Vestaburg Varsity Wolverines hit a major milestone on Monday, securing their first win of the season during a hard-fought doubleheader against Coleman. After a tough loss in the opener despite a dominant pitching performance, the Wolverines bounced back with a complete-game shutout to split the series. Game 1: Coleman 5, Vestaburg 1 The Wolverines started strong in the opening frame when Jansen Scholer grounded out to drive in a run, giving Vestaburg an early 1-0 lead. However, that would be the only time the Wolverines crossed the plate. On the mound, Colton Halgren put on a strikeout clinic. Halgren fanned 11 batters over five innings, allowing only five hits. Despite his command, four walks and a timely Coleman rally resulted in five runs, handing him a tough-luck loss. Gunner Harnack led the offense going 1-for-2, while Lucas Bunton wreaked havoc on the basepaths with two stolen bases. Game 2: Vestaburg 4, Coleman 0 The nightcap belonged entirely to Jansen Scholer. In a masterful performance on the mound, Scholer pitched a six-inning shutout to lead the Wolverines to their first victory of the year. His final stat line was nearly flawless: Innings: 6.0 Runs: 0 Hits: 2 Strikeouts: 9 Walks: 0 The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Vestaburg's plate discipline paid off. The Wolverines drew three walks in the inning, including an RBI walk by Scholer to break the tie. Scholer, Carter Allbee, and Gunner Harnack each tallied hits in the win. The Wolverines' patient approach at the plate was the difference-maker, as the team drew seven total walks. Scholer and Brayden Clements led that effort with two free passes each, while Colton Halgren added an RBI to help anchor the lineup. Up Next: Vestaburg looks to carry this momentum into their next conference matchup as they continue their push through the April schedule.
